Lecturing

Since 2009, I have worked with New York College in Athens lecturing on the following modules of the University of Greenwich BA in English Language Teaching:

Introduction to English Language Teaching

This course is specifically concerned to introduce students to ELT. The main purpose of this introductory course is to provide students with an understanding of aspects in which language learning takes place in classrooms, and an awareness of some aspects of the structure of contemporary English and the methodology used in teaching English as a Foreign Language.

By examining different methodologies and contexts students will be able to make informed decision about language teaching methods and techniques in ELT.

This course will lead up to and link with the Level 2 course The Methodology of Language Teaching.

Methodology and Practice of Language Teaching

This course examines current practice and developments in English language teaching, including communicative competence in language teaching and learning; teaching techniques; setting objectives; course design and mode of delivery; testing and assessment; language learners and the learning process.

This course is designed to build on the introductory ideas and methods introduced at Level 1 (Introduction to ELT) and look in more depth at the process of language learning and how to create the best conditions to promote and encourage the acquisition of language in the classroom.

When students have learnt essential techniques and methodologies in lesson planning, they will have the opportunity to observe classes, to teach classes, and finally to reflect on their experience.

Practical Teaching

This course enables students to apply techniques and skills such as analysis of learning needs, lesson planning and class management, using a variety of teaching techniques and evaluating both learner and teacher performances.

Students will be responsible for the planning, delivery and evaluation of learning. They will take part in team discussions about learners' progress and will reflect on the place of their teaching in the students' overall learning process.

Students will write detailed accounts of observed lessons and will compile a portfolio of lesson plans and practical teaching reports.

Language Teaching: Design and Practice

This course elaborates on the second language learning methodologies studied at level 5, and equips students with a theoretical understanding of the principles underlying the design and implementation of second language teaching materials. Students learn how to design and produce their own materials. In the teaching practice, students will be able to develop teaching skills such as lesson planning, classroom management and other teaching techniques and to reflect critically on learner and teacher performance.

I also teach on the following module of the University of Greenwich MA in Management of Language Learning:

Current Methodologies in Communicative Language Teaching

Communicative language teaching is a type of instruction which has received considerable attention in recent years. This approach based on the theory of communicative competence put forward by Hymes (1972) is based on the assumption that Communicative Language Teaching programmes will lead to the development of both linguistic competence (a knowledge of the rules of grammar) and communicative competence (a knowledge of the rules of language use).

The aim of the course is to develop and enhance students' theoretical and practical understanding of the concept of communicative competence which has led to several developments of both a theoretical and applied nature.

Specifically, the aims of the course are to introduce students to communicative language teaching methodology and the SLA theories underlying those principles. The course aims at helping students to establish a relationship between theory and practice in language pedagogy.

I have worked for the UK Open University teaching numerous courses since 1998. The course I currently teach is a module of the MA in Education (Applied Linguistics).

E854 - Investigating language in action

This masters-level course is for people who are interested in exploring how linguistic theories can be used to engage with professional contexts and real-world problems in which language is implicated. You will develop your skills in analysing English texts from a range of different perspectives – functional, critical and ethnographic. Whether your interests lie in language education, the social sciences or arts, you will find interesting points of connection as you examine and reflect on the nature and use of language. Throughout the course you will become familiar with online forums and other uses of web resources.
